English Reading Comprehension Class

The English reading comprehension class is for students grades 4 through 6. The class would use the study of two novels to reinforce reading for understanding, retention and response in a manner similar to that required by standardized testing, as well as what would be expected of them by their school teachers.

The first novel we will read and learn from is ÒThe Incredible JourneyÓ by Sheila Burnford. This classic children's book from 1961 is about three family pets Ð a Labrador retriever, a bull terrier and a Siamese cat Ð who set out through the Canadian wilderness to find their way home to the family they love. Along the way they face starvation and wild animals, and learn they can only survive by sticking together.

The instructor will use a variety of learning tools such as worksheets, classroom games, visual aids, movies and music to keep the students engaged and ensure their learning success. Each novel unit will end with a comprehensive test and will include weekly homework and at least one project.

Instructor Mike Patrick is a native English speaker born and raised in Connecticut. His two children, Audrey and Katie, have attended SCCS for the past six years. He is a certified high school English teacher and also teaches communications at Quinnipiac University. Mike is very excited to be providing this service to the SCCS community, and promises students a class that is fun, exciting and educational.
