Description:	Students will learn all the basic rules of chess, piece movements, capturing, check, checkmate, stalemate and much more! This class will help each student become confident in their ability to play a complete game, all the way to checkmate! Special attention will be given to learning opening principles so that a student��s first moves provide the foundation for a solid game. Topics covered include: Chess Foundation, The King, Rook, Bishop, Queen, Knight, Pawn, Pawn Promotion, Capture, Threat, Retreat, Block, Safe Squares, Illegal Moves, Check, Checkmate, Undefended Pieces, Castling, Pawn Shields, The Chess Board, and Piece Development. A course reader made up of selected chess puzzles will be provided (in PDF format) for students to review topics as homework. Enrolled students are able to participate in optional weekly Hamden Chess Club online tournaments at no additional cost during the term they are enrolled.
