Description: Objectives: Developing scientific reasoning skills and participating in science projects are crucial high school experiences that hold high value in the college admission process. This course aims to assist high school students in understanding the fundamental principles and processes of conducting scientific research, particularly in the field of behavioral sciences. Specifically, the course aims to help students: 1. Master essential concepts and skills of research methodology and design. 2. Transform everyday intuitions into testable research ideas and formulate sound research hypotheses. 3. Grasp the principles and ethics behind conducting experiments involving human participants. 4. Engage in ongoing research from both participant and researcher perspectives. 5. Cultivate the ability to critically evaluate behavioral research. This class follows a Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach, emphasizing one-on-one interaction between the instructor and students, as well as collaboration among students. Therefore, the class size is limited to a maximum of 10 students. Intended Audience: High school students, incoming 9th to 11th graders. Class Meeting Time: Mondays, 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm (Online) Instructor: Dr. Weihua Niu, Professor of Psychology, Pace University Brief Bio: Dr. Weihua Niu earned her BA in Psychology from Beijing Normal University and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from Yale University. With over 20 years of teaching experience, she has led courses such as Introduction to Psychology, Experimental Psychology, and Research Methods and Statistics at the undergraduate, Master's, and doctoral levels. Her extensive background includes mentoring student research projects from high school to doctoral levels.
